ATLANTA (AP) _ Nicaragua clinched a berth in the Olympic baseball medals round Sunday by beating Australia 10-0 behind the pitching of Jose Luis Quiroz and Oswaldo Mairena.
Nicaragua (4-2) will play either Cuba or the United States in its first medals-round game Thursday. Nicaragua has secured a spot with the best pitching of the round-robin tournament.
There have been two shutouts in the tournament, both by Nicaragua. Quiroz held Australia (1-5) to three hits and three walks while striking out six in seven innings. Mairena gave up two hits in the eighth, and the 10-run mercy rule was invoked after Nicaragua scored five in the bottom of the inning.
Bayardo Davila Montiel singled home two runs as Nicaragua went up 3-0 in the second. A wild pitch let in a run in the third, and Jorge Luis Avellan singled to make it 5-0 in the fourth.
Jose Ramon Padilla hit a two-run homer and Avellan singled home two more runs in the five-run eighth.
Players rounded the infield carrying their flag in celebration when the game ended.
