BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) _ Reserve Jeff Welsh threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead Western Michigan past Bowling Green 34-21 in the Mid-American Conference.
Welsh completed 16-of-23 passes after relieving starter Tim Lester, who went out with an ankle injury midway through the first quarter.
Welsh threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Corey Alston and added a 5-yarder to Mike Hutchings to put the Broncos ahead 31-14 in the third quarter.
Western (4-3 overall, 3-2 MAC) held Bowling Green to 94 rushing yards and shut out the Falcons in the fourth quarter.
Bowling Green (3-4, 3-1) had five turnovers, including a fumble that set up Brad Salent's 34-yard field goal that gave Western a 10-0 lead.
Leon Weathersby had a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for Bowling Green. The Falcons' other touchdowns came on Adam Lige's 1-yard run in the second quarter and a 25-yard pass from Bob Niemet to Damron Hamilton early in the third quarter, cutting Western's lead to 31-21.
Western's Robert Sanford ran for 104 yards on 17 carries. His 2-yard run in the second quarter put the Broncos up 17-7.
Niemet was 13-for-27 for 184 yards with two interceptions.
