Petition seeks to keep sex offender from being released

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington state Attorney General's office has filed a petition seeking to keep a sex offender from being released.
The Olympian reports the Attorney General's office filed the petition against the upcoming release of Randy Smith in the Thurston County Superior Court Friday.
Smith was convicted of first-degree rape of a child in 1990 and first-degree voyeurism in 2013.
The petition says the 59-year-old should not be released because he is mentally ill and sexually dangerous.
He was scheduled to be released Monday, but will be held until a hearing on the petition scheduled for Wednesday.
If a judge finds probable cause, Smith would be sent to the state's McNeil Island Special Commitment Center until a trial to determine if he meets the criteria for a sexually violent predator.
