Man Falls 180 Feet From Tower
Apr. 19, 1989
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ A man dismantling a 180-foot radio tower fell from the top but landed without breaking a bone after grabbing guy wires on the way down, authorities said.
Ivan Glaze, a foreman on a steel crew assigned to take down the tower, slipped Tuesday when hooking up his harness, said Associate State Forester Bill Mercer.
Glaze fell 10 feet to a guy wire and slid down it for about 30 or 40 feet before he lost his hold again, Mercer said.
Witnesses said he fell straight down another 40 feet to a second guy wire.
''He hung onto it and rode it down,'' Mercer said.
''It's amazing,'' he said. ''If he had to slip, that's the way to fall.''
Glaze, a Forestry employee, ''was pretty cut up and beat up'' but didn't break any bones, Mercer said.
Glaze was listed as stable late Tuesday at Baton Rouge General Medical Center.
