NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) _ Senior wide receiver Mikhael Ricks caught scoring passes of 50 and 77 yards to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 35-17 victory over West Texas A&M in their season openers Thursday night.
SFA (1-0) scored on four pass plays of more than 30 yards to secure the victory against the Buffaloes.
Ricks, a former tight end, first scored on a pass from quarterback Peyton Jones with 9:06 left in the first quarter. The point-after gave the Lumberjacks a 7-0 lead.
West Texas A&M (0-1) answered with 5:12 left in the first quarter with a 15-yard TD run by DeWayne Miles. The point-after tied the score, 7-7.
Ricks came back with 10:13 left in the half, carrying a pass from back-up quarterback Travis Fallon for a 77-yard scoring play. The point-after put SFA up 14-7.
Fallon's 34-yard touchdown pass to freshman Richard Daniels with 8 seconds left in the half, augmented by the point-after, gave the Lumberjacks a 21-7 halftime lead.
SFA's final touchdown pass came with 12:34 left in the game as sophomore tailback KaRon Coleman hit sophomore receiver Zach Woods with a 38-yard pass. The point-after put SFA on top, 35-14.
The Buffaloes' managed only a 39-yard TD pass from Kory Jones to Gary Thomas and a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
