WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals appear to be giving up what's been a disappointing season. They've traded second baseman Daniel Murphy to the Chicago Cubs and first baseman Matt Adams to the St. Louis Cardinals, and they aren't getting much in return: $50,000 from the Cardinals for Adams and Class-A infielder Andruw Monasterio and a player to be named later or cash from the Cubs for Murphy.

MIAMI (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton returns to Marlins Park for the first time since Miami traded him to the New York Yankees in December. Stanton spent his first eight years with the Marlins and was the NL MVP last season when he hit 59 home runs. Stanton went 0 for 7 with four strikeouts in mid-April when the Marlins visited Yankee Stadium. The slugger has 32 homers this year and 299 for his career going into the two-game series.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers left tackle Matt Kalil has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will be re-evaluated on a weekly basis. Kalil becomes Carolina's third starting offensive lineman — and the second tackle — to go down with a knee injury. The Panthers lost right tackle Daryl Williams, a second-team All-Pro in 2017, to a torn medial collateral ligament and dislocated patella and guard Amini Silatolu to a torn meniscus. There is no timetable for their return.

NEW YORK (AP) — Heisman Trophy runner-up Bryce Love of Stanford and Outland Trophy winner Ed Oliver of Houston highlight The Associated Press preseason All-America team. Chosen by AP poll voters, the team also features West Virginia quarterback Will Grier and his teammate, receiver David Sills V. Love ran for 2,118 yards and 8.05 per carry last season and was second to Baker Mayfield in the Heisman Trophy voting.

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Tennis Association has seeded Serena Williams No. 17 for the U.S. Open, nine spots higher than her current ranking of No. 26. Williams is one place behind her older sister, Venus. This will be the third Grand Slam tournament of Williams' return to competition since she gave birth to a daughter during the 2017 U.S. Open last September, then dealt with health complications.
