ST. LOUIS (AP) — The mother of a St. Louis man who was wielding a knife when he was fatally shot by police in 2014 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/2tinWCj ) reports that Karen Powell's federal lawsuit also names the officers and former Police Chief Sam Dotson.
Kajieme Powell was fatally shot on Aug. 19, 2014. The officers were cleared of charges after a review by the circuit attorney's office.
Police were called energy drinks and pastries were stolen from a market, and told the suspect had a knife. A bystander's video shows Powell approaching police shouting, "Shoot me! Kill me now!" Each officer fired six shots as Powell approached them with a knife.
Relatives of Powell say he suffered from mental illness.
