Ala. Boy, Shot Leaving Church, Dies
Jan. 17, 2000
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) _ A man shot his stepson as the boy was leaving church services Sunday with his family, police said.
Cedric Crutcher, 17, died hours later at a local hospital, said Huntsville police spokesman Wendell Johnson.
Witnesses said 41-year-old Byron Bonner was waiting in the parking lot when Crutcher left Northwest Church of Christ about noon. The two exchanged words, and Bonner allegedly shot Crutcher several times, with one shot striking the youth in the back of the head, Johnson said.
Bonner fled the scene but surrendered at the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham, about 90 miles south of Huntsville, at 9:10 p.m. Sunday.
Bonner, who had worked at the U.S. Post Office in Madison, and Crutcher's mother, Edna, were divorcing, Johnson said. It was not clear whether Bonson still worked at the post office, Johnson said. Police were called to her home earlier Sunday because Bonner was there, he said, and the woman had sought a restraining order against Bonner.
