ROME (AP) _ Police recovered 23 works of art from the 17th to 19th centuries, including a painting by Baroque artist Il Guercino.

The works were displayed in Rome Tuesday, minus Guercino's badly damaged painting, ``St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata,'' which was stolen in 1973 from a church in Novara province.

Il Guercino paintings in good condition can be worth millions of dollars, said Aurelia Brandt, art expert at Christie's in Rome.

Four works by 18th-century Italian painter Angiolo Maria Crivelli _ a cycle of hunting scenes _ were stolen four years ago from a villa near Milan.

Swiss and Italian police didn't say who took them, just that they were recovered in Switzerland after circulating through the illicit art market. The paintings will be returned to their owners after restoration. Officials released few other details.
