BASEL, Switzerland (AP) _ Fifth-seeded Andy Roddick beat Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-3 Wednesday in his first indoor match of the season to reach the second round of the Swiss Indoors.
Also Wednesday, French Open champion Albert Costa lost to Adrian Voinea 6-3, 6-3.
``Today was a terrible match,'' said Costa, who was seeded fourth. ``I'm feeling bad because I haven't been playing well at the moment. I've had this feeling before, though, so I know things will get better.''
The upset hurt Costa's chances of qualifying for the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup. He's now ninth in the standings; eight players are invited.
The man Costa beat in the French Open final, second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero, got past wild-card entry Marc Rosset 7-6 (11), 7-6 (4) Wednesday.
