Monk Pleads Guilty to Indecency
Feb. 24, 2000
JOHNSON CITY, Texas (AP) _ A monk pleaded guilty to indecency with a child and was sentenced to 10 years of probation Wednesday, less than a week before he was scheduled for trial.
State District Judge Gilford Jones accepted the plea entered by Samuel A. Greene Jr., 55, known as Father Benedict.
Charges against Greene and another monk, Jonathan Hitt, were filed last year and stemmed from their actions involving a 14-year-old novice monk studying at Christ of the Hills Monastery near Blanco in 1997.
Hitt, 38, known as Father Jeremiah, was convicted in October and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The victim testified that he had several sexual encounters with Hitt. The youth said he didn't object to the advances on the advice of Greene, the spiritual leader of the religious enclave.
