Former President Feels Ill But Insists on Returning Home
Oct. 15, 1987
ROME (AP) _ Former Italian President Sandro Pertini underwent tests at a hospital after feeling faint, but insisted on returning home, friends reported.
Pertini, 91, who fell ill in his Senate office, also had trouble breathing and was driven in his own car to San Filippo Neri Hospital.
In March, doctors had implanted a pacemaker to regulate Pertini's heart beat after he collapsed during a funeral.
Pertini was given the honorary post as senator for life when his presidential term ended in 1985.
''The spirit of our beloved president is the same as always,'' said Sen. Eugenio Bozzello Verole, a fellow Socialist. ''The one thing that worries us is his lack of appetite in recent days.''
