Man convicted in girlfriend's slaying gets 50-year sentence
Feb. 26, 2018
ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — A man convicted in the execution-style shooting death of his girlfriend has been sentenced to 50 years in state prison.
Abdul Shahid Aziz must serve nearly 43 years before he's eligible for parole.
Union County prosecutors say the 51-year-old Elizabeth man killed 40-year-old Ramona Jackson in July 2011. They say Aziz drove to a remote area of Elizabeth and got out of the car, then fired a single shot at close range into Jackson's forehead before driving away.
Jackson's boy was found about 12 hours later by workers for a company installing billboards along some nearby railroad tracks.
Prosecutors say Aziz confessed to the crime. But a state appellate court ruled in April 2016 that the confession couldn't be used.
Aziz was convicted last December on murder and weapons charges.
