SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ San Jose rookie center Mark Smith was taken from the ice by stretcher after being hit from behind by Carolina's Bates Battaglia in the Sharks' game against the Hurricanes Saturday night.

It appeared that Battaglia hit Smith in the jaw with his elbow in a behind-the-play hit midway through the second period.

Smith, a 1997 San Jose draft pick who made his NHL debut earlier this season, was down for about 10 minutes as team trainers hovered about him.

The Sharks said Smith was knocked out by the hit and sustained a head laceration, but had feeling in all of his extremities. Use of the stretcher was strictly precautionary, the team said.

Smith was taken to San Jose Medical Center for X-rays and observation.

Battaglia was given a game misconduct, which carries an automatic ejection, and a major penalty for charging.
