University President Wounded In Ambush
Jun. 30, 1988
MANILA, Philippines (AP) _ Attackers armed with hand grenades and automatic weapons ambushed the van of a university president Thursday, killing three of his aides and wounding the educator and three others, a radio station reported.
The private radio station DZRH quoted witnesses as saying Dr. Nemesio Prudente was rushed to a hospital. His condition could not be immediately ascertained.
It was the second ambush for Prudente, president of the government-run Polytechnic University of the Philippines. A university lawyer was killed in the first ambush last Nov. 11. That incident remains unsolved.
A homicide officer at Manila's police headquarters said all they knew was that a shooting occurred and a team of investigators was sent to the scene. The officer, who refused to identify himself, said the team had not reported back.
DZRH, reporting from the scene, quoted witnesses as saying the assailants hurled a hand grenade at Prudente's van and then sprayed it with bullets. Prudente's bodyguards immediately covered him with their bodies, the station reported.
It said the attack occurred a few yards from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila's Santa Mesa district.
Human rights groups blamed Prudente's first ambush on right-wing extremists.
Prudente's first ambush came a week after soldiers and police chanted ''Kill Prudente 3/8,'' whom they view as a left-wing figure, during an emotional funeral for a police captain and two other people killed by communist guerrillas.
Police and the military accused Prudente of using the university as a shelter for communist urban guerrillas. Prudente denied it.
