LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Derrick Scott scored four points and Brent Kincaid hit a 3-pointer during a late 9-0 spurt that carried No. 14 California (Pa.) to a 95-85 victory over third-ranked Alabama A&M in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II tournament Wednesday.
California (27-5) will play the winner of the game between top-ranked Fort Hays State and North Alabama in the semifinals Thursday night.
Candice Pickens sank two free throws with 5:41 left to give California a 64-62 lead. Scott followed with a layup and Kincaid a 3, both coming after Alabama A&M (28-3) missed shots, to push the margin to 69-62 at 4:23.
Alabama A&M, which entered the tourney on a 19-game winning streak, then turned the ball over and Scott raced down the court for a layup for a nine-point advantage 23 seconds later.
Alabama A&M got no closer than 80-76 on Maynard Nickson's 3 with 1:33 to go.
Robert Jones led California with 24 points, 16 coming in the first half in leading the Vulcans to a 38-35 lead. Candice Pickens and Reon Nesmith each scored 18 points, Scott 17 and Kincaid 16 for the winners.
Deartrus Goodmon and Coata Malone scored 20 points apiece for Alabama A&M while Alfred Motton had 13, Nickson 11 and Rod Richardson 10.
