Broadcast of Addict Injecting Himself Prompts Inquiry
Mar. 08, 1989
MILAN, Italy (AP) _ A prosecutor notified three television journalists Wednesday that they are being investigated because of a live broadcast of a drug addict injecting himself with heroin.
Prosecutor Enzo La Stella said the three could be charged with ''inducing a person to the illicit use of drugs.'' If convicted, they could be jailed for up to five years.
Journalists Guglielmo Zucconi, Dino Curto and Francesco D'Amato conducted the Feb. 13 newscast ''Speciale News'' broadcast by Channel 5 private network.
Six million people saw the program on Italy's drug problem, which showed a drug addict identified only as Claudio B. injecting himself with heroin.
Channel 5 officials said the live broadcast of the injection was intended to stress the dangers of drug use.
Zucconi, an experienced reporter who edited popular weekly magazines before moving to television, said they did not supply the drug or syringe used by Claudio B.
