GRAYLING, Mich. (AP) _ Dozens of cars crashed into one another in a huge traffic pileup today, injuring an unknown number of persons.

State police confirmed injuries were reported in the accident, on Interstate 75 about 180 miles northwest of Detroit, but had no details.

It was believed between 50 to 60 cars were involved, State Police Operations operator Jim Lorenz said. It snowed in the region earlier today and there could have been icy spots on the roads, the National Weather Service said.

``The number of cars is extravagant,'' said Beaver Creek Fire Department Chief Ed Holtcamp, whose department is near the scene. ``There are ambulances coming from three counties, in addition to Crawford County. There's heavy rescue involved. It's a mess.''

The pileup in northbound lanes is in a remote area near Hartwick Pines State Park.
