STONEY CREEK, Tenn. (AP) — An 88-year-old woman has been badly beaten in Tennessee.

The Johnson City Press reports the woman was hospitalized after being found unresponsive by family members on Friday. Carter County Sheriff's Sgt. David Tranbarger said he spoke to the victim later that day, but her face and jaw were too swollen for her to speak.

Tranbarger said the woman nodded when asked if she was assaulted and when asked if she was raped. A sexual assault was completed. Jeff Markland, head of the sheriff's department's Criminal Investigation Division, said investigators haven't determined whether there had been a sexual assault.

The victim's bedsheets, eye patch and purse were missing.

No arrests have been made. The victim has not been identified.
