NEW YORK (AP) _ Dr. John Holloszy has been awarded the highest honor in sports science, a $500,000 prize presented by the International Olympic Committee.
The IOC Medical Commission chose Holloszy for his contributions to the science of enhanced athletic performance. He will receive a gold medal during the opening ceremony of the IOC's annual meeting at the Sydney Games next month.
``Dr. Holloszy's research on endurance exercise has had a tremendous impact on athletic competition,'' said Lenny Krayzelburg, a world champion swimmer and U.S. Olympic hopeful. ``By incorporating his findings on muscle development into training programs, we can naturally maximize our performance.''
The award's full name is the IOC Olympic Prize on Sports Sciences endowed by Pfizer.
