NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) _ Jose Maria Canizares, Bob Gilder, Dana Quigley, Bruce Fleisher and Dave Stockton fired 6-under 65s to share the first round lead Friday in the Toshiba Senior PGA Classic.
Jim Colbert, Hale Irwin and Terry Mauney were two shots back after shooting 4-under 67s.
Defending champion Allen Doyle shot a 68 and led 10 golfers who were three shots back as 51 players shot par or better in tricky wind conditions at 6,584-yard Newport Beach Country Club.
Quigley missed 10 greens, but finished with six birdies in a bogey-free round.
``I've never had a more peculiar round than this one,'' Quigley said. ``I missed the green 10 times and had 10 chances to make a bogey and I saved every one of them.''
Quigley made three 25-foot birdie putts on three of the eight greens he hit in regulation. He chipped brilliantly from off the green including three par-saving chips to within inches of the hole. He twice saved par with superb bunker shots.
``I escaped with my life out there,'' Quigley said. ``My chipping was spectacular and I didn't leave a single shot out there. I was having so much fun and I gained so much confidence I knew I could get it up and down from anywhere.''
Canizares, seeking his first victory as a senior, had seven birdies and a bogey. His longest birdie putt was 12 feet.
``I'm putting better than normal and I really putted well,'' Canizares said.
Fleisher birdied the first three holes and finished with six.
``It was a wonderful start in what I considered difficult conditions,'' Fleisher said. ``So good in fact that I thought `why not birdie them all.' ''
Lanny Wadkins withdrew because of the flu.
