Suspect Falls Into Pond During Chase And Drowns
Dec. 05, 1985
GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) _ A man being chased by police and patrons after a $1 tavern robbery fell over a 50-foot embankment and drowned in a pond.
Jeffrey Allan Davis, 32, died Tuesday of drowning and hypothermia, said Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Joseph Musgrove.
Barmaid Betty Mitchell said Davis told tavern customers that a car was burning in an alley and, when their attention was diverted, rushed past her behind the bar and fled with a cash box. All but $1 was recovered, she said.
Police said Davis was chased through a wooded area toward the quarry, about three blocks from the tavern. Detective Sgt. Michael Dell said an officer heard something fall into the pond, but none of the pursuers saw Davis hit the water.
Fire department divers recovered his body from about 12 feet of water an hour later, said Fire Chief Edward Hutchinson.
