SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ A woman gave birth to a baby girl after her compact car collided with a garbage truck, authorities said.

Robin A. Caza, 36, was in serious condition today with internal and head injuries at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. Her newborn daughter was in critical condition, said hospital spokeswoman Bonnie Voiland.

The hospital declined to release any other information about the mother and her child.

Caza, who was eight months pregnant, was conscious following the Wednesday morning crash, police said. She delivered her baby shortly after noon, said Nanette McDonald, another hospital spokeswoman.

The woman's 3 1/2 -year-old son, who was in a child restraint seat, was not injured, police said.

The driver of the truck, Robert J. Szopinski, 31, was trapped in the cab of his rig for 42 minutes and had to be cut free. He suffered minor hip and arm injuries.

Police have issued no tickets but are continuing their investigation.
