Customs Officials Seize Record Amount of Heroin at Newark Airport
Aug. 24, 1991
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) _ U.S. Customs agents found 40 pounds of heroin in the luggage of two sisters arriving on a flight from Sweden. Authorities said it was a record heroin seizure at Newark International Airport.
Judy Merle Corbin, 42, of Atlanta, and Sandra Sue Corbin, 41, of Kansas City, Mo., were ordered held without bail Friday on a charge of unlawful importation of heroin, Customs spokesman Neil Pitagno said.
Authorities said they found the drugs Thursday, hidden in a false-sided suitcase and roller bag the women were carrying as they arrived on an SAS flight from Stockholm.
Robert Van Etten, special Customs agent in charge at Newark, said the heroin had an estimated street value of $18 million.
Before the latest seizure, the largest heroin bust at the airport was 11 pounds in October 1990, Van Etten said.
