LOS LUNAS, N.M. (AP) _ Two brothers, both law enforcement officers, were shot as they helped break up a bar fight early Sunday. One brother died.
Valencia County sheriff's Deputy Damacio Montano, 28, was shot several times outside the bar and died at the scene, authorities said.
His brother, state police Officer Eric Montano, was hospitalized in satisfactory condition with a hip wound. No one else was injured.
A man was arrested Sunday on an outstanding murder warrant stemming from an unconnected Los Lunas murder case, said state police spokesman Lt. Greg Toya.
Nestor Chavez, 28, is also a suspect in Sunday's shootings, and police were looking for another man in connection with the crime, Toya said.
Toya said the Montanos, who were off duty and in civilian clothing, had been eating in the Two Minute Warning sports bar when they saw two women fighting.
They were helping bouncers take the women outside when a car pulled up and someone fired a handgun at the brothers, Toya said.
