Sampras Pulls Out of Team Cup to Rest Back Muscle
May. 23, 1996
DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) _ Pete Sampras pulled out of his match at the World Team Cup today because of a back problem, but said he will be ready for the French Open next week.
``If the French Open had begun Wednesday, I would have had to withdraw,'' Sampras said.
The world's top-ranked player had been scheduled to play Richard Krajicek in today's matches between the United States and the Netherlands.
But he decided not to play because of tenseness in his back muscles. Since his arrival in Europe, Sampras has experienced problems with the unseasonably cold, wet weather.
Sampras said he hopes to play Saturday against Russia.
``I will practice on Friday and then decide if I can play Saturday,'' he said.
Sampras said he would travel to Paris even if he does not play Saturday.
``I know my body and feel that it is improving day by day,'' Sampras said. ``I will play in the French Open no matter what.''
