PHOENIX (AP) — Jake Arrieta pitches for the Phillies, looking for their sixth straight victory when they visit Arizona in a matchup of NL division leaders. Zack Godley goes for the Diamondbacks.
CHICAGO (AP) — Lance Lynn makes his first start for the Yankees, facing the White Sox in Chicago. The right-hander was acquired from Minnesota last Monday and will take the rotation spot previously held by an inconsistent Sonny Gray, who was demoted to the bullpen. Lynn threw 4 1/3 shutout innings of relief with five strikeouts in his New York debut. The Yankees, coming off a four-game sweep by the rival Red Sox, have lost a season-high five straight and trail Boston by 9 1/2 games in the AL East.
KANSAS CITY (AP) — Cole Hamels makes his second start for the Cubs when they open a three-game series at last-place Kansas City. Hamels was acquired in a July 27 trade with Texas. The veteran lefty had been struggling with the Rangers, but he struck out nine while pitching five effective innings in a 9-2 victory at Pittsburgh in his Chicago debut last Wednesday.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA has landed forward Shareef O'Neal. The son of retired NBA great Shaquille O'Neal signed a grant-in-aid to attend UCLA this fall. He will enroll in summer school this month. The 6-foot-10, 220-pounder from Los Angeles played the last two seasons at Crossroads High in nearby Santa Monica. As a senior last season, O'Neal helped the school win the CIF Division II state title for the first time since 1997.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Thirteen University of North Carolina football players will face early season suspensions for selling team-issued shoes. UNC says nine of the players received four-game suspensions for the secondary NCAA violations. The list of players include sophomore quarterback Chazz Surratt, who is suspended the first four games. Surratt started seven games last season and entered preseason competing with Nathan Elliott for the starting job.
