FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ American Airlines systemwide traffic dropped by a third in September from the same month a year ago, driven primarily by the national tragedy on Sept. 11, company officials said Monday.

The Fort Worth-based carrier's load factor was 59.6 percent, down from 69.8 percent in September 2000.

International traffic was down 29.3 percent in September on a decrease in capacity of 17.3 percent, and domestic traffic was down 36.0 percent on a capacity decrease of 24.7 percent, officials said.

American boarded 4.3 million passengers during the month, down 35.8 percent from the 6.7 million passengers who were boarded in September a year ago.
