5 Teens Die in Pennsylvania Crash
Jan. 30, 1999
LIMA, Pa. (AP) _ Five teen-age girls returning from a shopping trip died after their car veered off the road, flipped over and crashed into a tree, state police said.
The girls were all juniors at Penncrest High School in Marple Township, which planned to make 30 counselors available today to grieving students, parents and teachers.
The car crossed a median strip about 15 miles west of Philadelphia, swerved back into the northbound lanes and hit a dirt embankment. It then rolled on its side and crashed into a tree, according to a state police report.
It was unclear why the car went out of control, but investigators said it was likely that the car was speeding.
``Were they going faster than 55? It's a pretty good guess to say yes,'' said trooper Joseph McCunney.
The victims were identified as Loren Wells, 16, the driver of the car; Shaena Grigaitis, 16; Rachel Lehr, 17; Becky Weirich, 16; and Tracy Graham, 17.
