Palace into Premier League after beating Watford
May. 27, 2013
LONDON (AP) — Crystal Palace will play in the Premier League next season after winning the most lucrative match in world soccer, beating Watford 1-0 at Wembley Stadium after Kevin Phillips scored on a penalty in extra time.
Less than two months before his 40th birthday, Phillips came off the bench to smash his spot kick beyond Manuel Almunia in the 105th minute after Wilfried Zaha was fouled by Marco Cassetti.
Zaha, Palace's star player, will join Manchester United next season.
The one-off match to decide the third promoted League Championship team is worth at least $181 million for the winner. That's what the team can expect to make on prize money and other payments even if it finishes last in its first season. That doesn't include sponsorship, ticket and merchandise sales.
