MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) _ Seth Markantony has been kicked off the Northern Michigan basketball team and Brian Pinks off the football team for violating team rules, the university announced Friday.

Because of student confidentiality policies, the school released no information about what rules were violated by the two sophomores. The school did say they are tied to the same violation case that earlier resulted in the dismissal of six Northern hockey players.

The athletes were not expelled from the university.

Rick Comley, Northern's athletic director and hockey coach, announced Wednesday that six hockey players were off the team: Kory Karlander, Don McCusker, Bobby Davis, Trevor Rosen, Derek Reynolds and Ryan Esselmont.

The athletes can apply for team membership next school year.
