Arafat Supporters Burn U.S. Flag
Feb. 15, 1999
NABLUS, West Bank (AP) _ Supporters of Yasser Arafat's Fatah party burned an American flag on Monday and blew up a cardboard model of a Jewish settlement.
The leader of the Fatah group in Nablus, Yasser Abu Baker, said that although the U.S. was the sponsor of Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, it is still ``the enemy of the Arabs, as shown by its attacks on Iraq and its bias toward Israel in the negotiations.''
The demonstrators used firecrackers to light a model of a Jewish settlement, and students in army fatigues conducted a mock military drill.
Some 3,000 Fatah activists participated in Monday's rally, part of ongoing celebrations marking the 1965 founding of the movement.
