GREENVILLE, Ill. (AP) _ One student died and seven were injured early today when a fire destroyed part of a men's dormitory at Greenville College, a small liberal arts school in southwestern Illinois.
The fire broke out about 5 a.m. in Kinney Hall, a two-story dormitory housing about 40 students.
``The building is still standing, but the west wing is gutted,'' college spokeswoman Robin Florian said.
She identified the dead student as Joel Pierce, 22, a junior from Warren, N.H.
Seven other students who lived at the dormitory were taken to Utlaut Memorial Hospital in Greenville for various injuries. Six were treated and released. One remained under observation this morning, Florian said.
The cause and origin of the fire was under investigation.
Greenville College has about 1,000 students, including 560 who live on campus.
