Friedman to fill seat of late Massachusetts Sen. Donnelly
Jul. 26, 2017
ARLINGTON, Mass. (AP) — The former chief of staff to the late state Sen. Kenneth Donnelly has won a special election to fill Donnelly's seat on Beacon Hill.
Democrat Cindy Friedman of Arlington easily defeated Ian Jackson of the Green-Rainbow Party in Tuesday's low turnout election in the 4th Middlesex District.
There was no Republican candidate on the ballot.
Friedman was a top aide to Donnelly, who died from brain cancer in April. The retired firefighter had served in the Massachusetts Senate since 2009.
The district is comprised of Arlington, Billerica, Burlington, Woburn and much of Lexington.
Friedman won a three-way Democratic primary last month. She'll fill out the remainder of Donnelly's two-year term and be up for re-election in November 2018.
