Two Killed in Oil Rig Accident
Jul. 18, 1998
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ The drilling section of an offshore oil rig collapsed Friday in the Gulf of Mexico, killing two people. Ten workers were injured, and one other person was missing.
About 70 people were on the rig when it collapsed, about five miles east of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The injured workers were taken by helicopter to a hospital, and the others were taken to shore by boat.
Searchers in Coast Guard helicopters and boats, civilian tugboats and state wildlife boats were looking for the missing man.
The cause of the accident was not known. It was not clear if any oil leaked into the water, but officials said it was unlikely because the rig was being built.
