KASHIWA, Japan (AP) _ Michiko Hattori, an All-America golfer at the University of Texas, captured her third Japan Women's Amateur Golf Championship Thursday with a comfortable nine-stroke margin.
Hattori, who placed seventh in this year's NCAA Women's golf championships, shot an 73 for a three-round total of 214, five under par, on the 6,259-yard Kashiwa Golf Club.
Hattori, 19 and a former U.S. Women's Amateur winner, finished ahead of Emiko Miki, the 1987 Kanto (East Japan) amateur winner who had a 223.
As a freshman at Texas, Hattori won five of the 11 tournaments she entered.
In Thursday's round, she missed an 8-foot par putt on the 372-yard, par-4 first hole and also bogeyed the par-5 11th hole. Hattori had birdies on the third and 15th holes to reach even par.
Hattori became the youngest player to win the Japan Women's Amateur title when she won it at the age of 15 in 1984. She also won it, along with the U.S. Women's Amatuer crown, the following year.
As a freshman this season at Texas, Hattori won five of the 11 tournaments she entered.
