NEW YORK (AP) _ Candy Maldonado, one of the top pinch-hitters in the major leagues last season, agreed to terms with the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, thus avoiding a salary arbitration case.

Maldonado, who made $170,000 last year, had sought $440,000 this season while the Giants offered $390,000. He reached agreement on a one-year contract worth $415,000.

As a pinch-hitter, Maldonado went 17-for-40 with four home runs and 20 runs batted in. Maldonado eventually earned a job as a starting outfielder and finished the season with a .252 average, 18 homers and 85 RBI.
