LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) _ A man trying to cross illegally into Zimbabwe from Zambia at night was crushed to death by a rogue hippopotamus, and his son was seriously injured by the beast, police said Monday.
The two-ton hippo chased Gibson Mtonga and his son, Chaipa, on Saturday night as they were trying to cross the border near Victoria Falls, said police spokesman Alfred Mulopa.
Chaipa, 13, told police he was hurled several yards by the animal, which then killed his father.
Mulopa said they were turned back by Zimbabwean immigration authorities earlier Saturday but apparently tried to cross the border after dark.
The Victoria Falls border post closes at night - the time hippos usually leave the water to forage on land.
