Strategic Rocket Forces Chief Identified
Nov. 18, 1985
MOSCOW (AP) _ The Communist Party daily Pravda today identified the new commander of Soviet strategic rocket forces as Yuri Maximov, who had previously served as district commander for Central Asia.
Pravda interviewed Maximov, 61, on the eve of Missile Forces and Artillery Day.
Maximov's comments broke no new ground in Soviet military policy, but the interview was believed to be the first published report of his appointment.
His 70-year-old predecessor, Marshal Vladimir F. Tolubko, was removed over the summer and assigned to the Defense Inspectorate, an honorable pre- retirement position.
Tolubko's reassignment was confirmed by Col.-Gen. Nikolai Chervov at a news conference in July.
