WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is taking the Washington debate over his Supreme Court nominee to the homes of two red-state Senate Democrats this week, elevating Judge Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation as a political litmus test for voters. Trump's strategy aims to turn the screws on the lawmakers, Jon Tester of Montana and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, who find themselves caught between Senate leaders and progressive donors who are fighting Kavanaugh's confirmation, and their states' more conservative electorate, which is more broadly supportive of Trump's pick. BUFFALO, S.D. — A $20,000 certificate of deposit that was supposed to serve as a bond for 40 idled natural gas wells in northwestern South Dakota was cashed out because company officials did not remember what the money was for, according to one of the officials. Texas-based Spyglass Cedar Creek LP is opposing South Dakota's revocation of the company's permits for the wells near Buffalo. A state hearing is scheduled Oct. 18. UPCOMING: 250 words.
