Mar. 24, 2005
PAISLEY, Scotland (AP) _ The United States defeated Italy 9-5 Thursday to complete its round-robin portion of the World Women's Curling Championship with a 10-1 record.
Sweden (10-0) is the only undefeated squad in the 12-team tournament, retaking first place from the Americans after its 9-3 victory over Switzerland.
Canada rallied past Norway 11-10 to join Sweden and the United States in the playoffs. Canada is in third place, and Russia jumped ahead of Norway into fourth by beating Denmark 8-4. Norway can claim the last playoff berth if Russia loses its final game to Scotland on Friday.
Denmark downed last-place Finland 10-4 for a second straight win, but is unable to challenge for a playoff spot with a 3-6 record. Finland lost its second match of the day, 8-6 to China. Scotland, which won the 2002 Olympic title representing Britain, defeated Japan 9-8.
The world championships of 2003, '04 and '05 determine berths in next year's Turin Olympics. The top nine nations from those tournaments, plus host Italy, qualify.
