Mobil Unit To Make Clear Food Packaging
Mar. 02, 1987
NEW YORK (AP) _ Mobil Chemical Co., a subsidiary of Mobil Oil Corp., will begin manufacturing and marketing clear food packaging for supermarkets and institutions.
Mobil Chemical is already the world's largest producer of disposable plastic products, according to the parent company. It said Monday that Mobil Chemical will begin making a clear container line this month and sharply raise production in the autumn to an annual rate of more than 20 million pounds of finished product.
The clear containers will be made from oriented polystyrene at the company's plant in Canandaigua, N.Y.
The company is prepared to boost production substantially with future additions to the plant, Mobil said, citing projections that food industry demand for clear packaging could increase by 15 percent a year over the next five years.
Manufacturers are already being pressed to meet a surge in demand for clear containers made of oriented polystyrene, such as take-out salad packaging for fast-food chains, Mobil said.
Major uses of the clear packaging include cookie, candy and bakery trays, grocery salad bar items, delicatessen containers, produce trays, and trays for meat and poultry.
