NEW YORK (AP) _ Martina Hingis will have to learn her opening opponent in the season-ending Chase Championships.

Only 14 players have clinched spots in next week's 16-player event in Madison Square Garden.

In today's draw, Hingis, the world's No. 1 player, was selected to face an opponent ``to be announced.'' There's also a chance her second-round opponent will carry the same designation.

The winner of a first-round match between No. 7 seed Mary Pierce and ``TBA'' will take on Hingis in the quarterfinals.

Currently, Brenda Schultz-McCarthy is in 15th place and will meet Hingis, while Sabine Appelmans is 16th and slotted to play Pierce.

However, Lisa Raymond and Ai Sugiyama have not been eliminated and could qualify for the Chase Championships ahead of Appelmans or Schultz-McCarthy or both.

Hingis lost a five-set thriller to Steffi Graf in last year's Chase Championships title match, which is the only time women play a best-of-5 sets format.

Other first-round pairings pit No. 2 seed Jana Novotna against Conchita Martinez, No. 3 Amanda Coetzer against Nathalie Tauziat, No. 4 Lindsay Davenport against Mary Joe Fernandez, No. 5 Monica Seles against Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, No. 6 Iva Majoli against Anke Huber, and No. 8 Irina Spirlea against Sandrine Testud.
