SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Panthers right tackle Daryl Williams has been carted off the field with his right leg in brace during the team's first fully padded practice. Williams was engaged with two pass rushers during today's 11-on-11 team drills at Wofford College when his knee bent back awkwardly. Coach Ron Rivera said Williams was returning to Charlotte, North Carolina to be examined.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — For the second year in a row, the Washington Redskins have had a defensive lineman drafted out of Alabama go down with a foot injury. First-round pick Daron Payne is expected to miss two to three weeks after injuring an ankle during practice yesterday. Last year, Jonathan Allen's rookie year was cut short five games into the season because of a sprain.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have opened training camp without their prized rookie quarterback. Sam Darnold officially became a contract holdout when the team began its first practice of the summer yesterday. The No. 3 overall draft pick joins Chicago linebacker Roquan Smith, the No. 8 choice, as the only unsigned picks from the entire draft.
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland rookie Baker Mayfield is paying for the Browns quarterbacks to hang out in an RV at training camp. As part of his initiation into the NFL, the No. 1 overall draft pick is funding a camper that the Browns QBs retreat to between practice sessions to nap, watch TV or just get away from football. The vehicle, parked just outside the training facility, was the idea of backup quarterback Drew Stanton.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Rangers have avoided arbitration with defenseman Brady Skjei (shay) and agreed on a six-year contract. General manager Jeff Gorton announced the deal with the 24-year-old restricted free agent today, three days before Sjkei's arbitration hearing was scheduled. Skjei was coming off his entry-level contract. Playing all 82 games last season, Sjkei averaged a career-high 21 minutes a game and had four goals and 21 assists.
