PHOENIX (AP) _ Russ Springer and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms Tuesday on a $1.65 million, two-year contract.

Springer, a 29-year-old right-hander, was Arizona's third pick in the third round of November's expansion draft. He must pass a physical before the deal is finalized.

He was 3-3 with three saves and a 4.23 ERA in 54 relief appearances last season for the Houston Astros. He also has pitched for the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and California Angels in a pro career that began in 1989.

Springer, who had filed for salary arbitration, gets $700,000 this season and $950,000 in 1999. He made $400,000 last year.
