McVeigh Wants Judge Removed
Apr. 05, 2000
DENVER (AP) _ Timothy McVeigh is asking a federal appeals court for an emergency order removing U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch from weighing McVeigh's request for a new trial in the Oklahoma bombing.
McVeigh has argued on appeal that his lawyer during the trial, Stephen Jones, leaked inflammatory stories about McVeigh to the media.
In court papers filed Tuesday with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, McVeigh said Matsch should be removed from the case because he has made favorable comments about Jones. Matsch should be taken off the case to ``eliminate any appearance of bias.''
McVeigh was convicted in the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building that killed 168 peope. He was sentenced to death.
