WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Associated Press erroneously reported on Dec. 30 that federal employees hired before January 1984 and belonging to the Civil Service Retirement System receive a defined-benefit pension plus Social Security benefits in retirement.

Those government workers do not receive Social Security benefits nor pay Social Security taxes.

Federal employees hired after Dec. 31, 1983 are covered by Social Security. So are those government workers hired before then who decide to switch from the Civil Service Retirement System to the government's new Federal Employee Retirement System.

The error occurred in a story about few of the eligible workers signing up to switch to the new program.
