EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Penny Hardaway and Nick Anderson each scored 21 points as the Orlando Magic beat the New Jersey Nets 89-81 Wednesday night.
Hardaway also had eight rebounds and six assists as the Magic improved to 3-1. The Nets, playing without injured guards Sam Cassell, Kerry Kittles and Eric Murdock, fell to 1-2.
After falling behind 71-51 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Nets staged a late rally but were never able to get the deficit under eight.
Horace Grant added 15 points for the Magic, while Keith Van Horn and Scott Burrell each scored 17 for the Nets.
The Magic took the lead for good with an 11-4 run midway through the first period. Hardaway had five points and Anderson hit a three-pointer during the spurt.
Orlando opened the second period with another 11-4 run, including eight points by Anderson, to take a 38-25 lead. The Magic also started strong in the third period, outscoring the Nets 12-2 as Horace Grant scored two baskets and Anderson and Hardaway each had one.
Notes: Before the game, Orlando placed forward Derek Strong on the injured list with a bruised right heel. ... Murdock (groin), Cassell (ankle), Kittles (knee) and Rony Seikaly (ankle) missed the game for the Nets.
