Don Beasley was fired as head basketball coach at Northwes
Jul. 27, 1988
NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) _ Don Beasley was fired as head basketball coach at Northwestern Louisiana today because of investigations into alleged NCAA and Southland Conference rules violations in men's basketball.
University president Robert A. Alost said a preliminary review of possible infractions ''mandates a change in the leadership of the basketball program.''
He did not say what infractions were alleged, but said the decision to fire Beasley ''does not necessarily mean that there is any substance to the charges against the basketball program.
''But even the hint of impropreity is detrimental to the university, and it is essential to send the message to Northwestern students, alumni and friends that the honor of the institution will be zealously guarded.''
In a statement, Alostg said, ''At this point, it was determined that the best interests of the university and of Coach Beasley would be served by his termination. Coach Beasley concurs with that decision.''
Beasley said in a statement that the future of Northwestern basketball ''is far more important to me than the current situation which I face as an individual and a coach, and I accept and understand the president's decision to make a change.''
Allegations against the program followed reports of a decision not to renew the contract of assistant basketball coach Wayne Waggoner.
A faculty committee will be named to investigate further, Alost said. He said the university ''will also continue to cooperate completely with the NCAA and Southland Conference in addressiong the allegations against men's basketball.''
Alost said the search for a new coach will begin immediately.
''During the ongoing review by NSU, the NCAA and the Southland Conference, I will not comment on the allegations or the investigation, and I have addressed others at the university not to discuss the matter except in the formal process of the review,'' Alost said.
Beasley was a 1965 Northwestern graduate. He worked at Middle Tennesse, Jacksonville, Stetson, Mississippi State, and Georgia, before returning to Northwestern as head coach in 1985.
At Northwestern, Beasley turned around a program that had gone 3-25 in 1984. His record in 1985-6 was 11-16, 15-13 in 1986-87 and 16-12 in 1987-88.
