Connors, Evert to Work Together for NBC
Feb. 02, 1990
NEW YORK (AP) _ Tennis legends Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert found they were no love match, but NBC thinks they'll be a good team in the TV booth.
Connors and Evert, who were once engaged, will work together as commentators at the French Open and Wimbledon this year, the network announced Thursday.
Connors had played in 18 consecutive Wimbledons and won the Grand Slam event twice, in 1974 and 1982. But he said he's beginning a transition to life after tennis.
''Tennis has been my whole life,'' he said. ''But I've gotten to the point where I have to think about what to do after I stop playing.''
Connors, 37, said he will play 12 to 14 tournaments this year, including the U.S. Open. ''I'll keep playing as long as I enjoy it,'' he said.
Evert, who retired from the women's tour after last year's U.S. Open, also will be part of NBC's telecast of the Family Circle women's tournament in Hilton Head, S.C., on April 7-8.
